Bryan
Henry Elected IUPAC Vice-President
IUPAC is pleased to announce that Bryan R. Henry, FCIC, professor of chemistry
at the department of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Guelph,
was electred IUPAC vice-president and president-elect at the 42nd IUPAC
Council Meeting August 16-17 in Ottawa, ON.
Henry
served as scientific program chair of the 39th IUPAC Congress, held in
conjunction with the IUPAC General Assembly. Since 1998, he has served
as chair of the Canadian National Committee for IUPAC. His accomplishments
also include chairing the Committee of Chemistry, Department Chairs of
Ontario Universities (1990-1993), serving as president (1992-1993) and
vice-president (1991-1992) of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC),
and also working as chair (1997-1998) and vice-chair (1996-1997) of the
Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC).
It
is expected that Henry will continue his strong leadership of IUPAC in
adressing the challenges facing chemisrty in the 21st century.
IUPAC
was formed in 1919 by chemists from industry and acedemia. For nearly
85 years, the Union has succeeded in fostering worldwide communications
in the chemical sciences and in uniting academic, industrial and public
sector chemistry in a common language. IUPAC is recognized as the world
authority on chemical nomenclature, terminology, standardized methods
for measurement, atomic weights and many other critically evaluated data.
